The Wizards are the latest potential suitor to emerge in the Jonathan Kuminga sweepstakes, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, who reports that Washington has entered the picture within the last 24 hours. The idea of the 22-year-old forward fitting into the Wizards’ rebuild has “gained real momentum,” sources tell Slater.
In addition to Washington, the Kings, Heat, Bulls, Bucks, and Nets have all expressed “varying levels” of interest in the Warriors‘ restricted free agent, Slater writes.
Confirming prior reporting out of Sacramento, Slater says the Kings floated an offer that would include 2024 first-round pick Devin Carter, veteran forward Dario Saric, and a pair of second-round picks. However, Golden State views that as a “buy-low” attempt, per Slater, who suggests the Pacific rivals haven’t gained any real traction.
Both the Warriors and Kuminga appear willing to be patient in the hopes of getting what they want out of the process, Slater explains. From the team’s perspective, that would mean acquiring a promising young player and a first-round pick in any sign-and-trade scenario. For Kuminga, the goal is ending up in a situation where he feels he has the full support of an organization and its coaching staff and can be a featured part of a team’s core.
If there’s no resolution by the time the Las Vegas Summer League tips off next week, the tentative plan is for Kuminga’s camp to have in-person meetings with interested teams in Vegas, Slater notes.
One of those meetings could involved the Warriors. As Slater details, the idea of the former No. 7 overall pick working out a deal to remain in Golden State isn’t off the table, so there has been talk of Kuminga, agent Aaron Turner, head coach Steve Kerr, and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. sitting down together in Vegas to discuss what a reunion might look like.
Kuminga appeared in just 47 games in 2024/25, having missed more than two months due to a badly sprained ankle. He had an inconsistent role when healthy, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 24.3 minutes per game, with a .454/.305/.668 shooting line.
Although he was out of the Warriors’ rotation entirely for some key games at the end of the regular season and in the postseason, Kuminga averaged 24.3 points per game on .554/.389/.720 shooting in his final four playoff games vs. Minnesota after Stephen Curry injured his hamstring, providing a reminder of his offensive upside ahead of his restricted free agency.
I would love a sign-and-trade for Daniel Gafford. Wouldn’t happen but would be great for GS.
I Wish!!!
That would be interesting!
Let’s start with the Asking Price
Centerpiece: Promising Young Player
Piece: 1 First Round Pick
IMO
Promising Young Player definition
Age 25 or below
A Starter in top 20 teams
Example:
Dyson Daniels age 22
Tari Eason Age 24
I just heard the counter offer
Warriors get Murray, Ellis and filler
Fair?
Let’s open the new conversation
Ellis has a rookie contract = 1 First
Should be looking at Wizards roster lol. They do have good young talent.
If that’s the current price to beat them half the league should atleast be interested or in discussions.
Low key Kuminga for Wiggins could actually be a decent trade.
It’s a better return than Saric, Carter and 2 seconds. He knows the GSW system and was a champ there. He’s got his flaws no doubt but as a likely third option and paired on the wing with Jimmy they’d be a real threat.
As for Miami he’s only 22 and had two really solid seasons. Real raw but full of potential.
A core of Herro Kuminga Bam Ware and then the likes of Kasparas, Larson and Jovic aswell they had a nice thing going there. Sets them up better for a Giannas trade also
Wiggins I done. He seems to just be out there and not competing like he did before his dad passed. I would not do that if I was GSW. Either a good big or give me assets and a rotation player.
Wiggins has never had a motor. So much wasted talent. Such a shame he won a ring with GS’s talented team.
Kuminga and Wiggins have the same ceiling and similar floors. Almost thought they were too similar when they were together.
If Miami wanted Kuminga then he’d probably already be there.
I think the kings made a fair offer. Idk what GS thinks they’re getting. It’s a sign and trade of a guy who at this point is pretty average.
A promising young player and a first round pick is crazy.
IMO
Kuminga is a below average player, but he has scary high potential
Carter is a bust, not a promising young player
Keegan Muray is a promising young player,, 2 years older than Kuminga
You don’t trade bust for young talent, you don’t.
How is a player a bust after half a season in which they started off injured?
GS is looking for a better fit than Kuminga, not to just dump Kuminga for nothing. Carter was a defense first PG in a bad draft that struggled. Saric isnt worth a roster spot, and two 2nds is not compensation.
If a team wants Kuminga they need to give up a player worth a rotation spot, or a couple picks to go get one. GSW dont think he isnt valuable they just want a better fit. If the offer doesnt make the team better than just with Kuminga this year why would they do it?
The whole point of the deal is they dont have time to wait around and tolerate bad min while Kuminga figures it out. If they arent improved this year none of the players on offer have the long term upside of JK.
You say that someone would need to give up a player worth a rotation spot…and yet I guess the question is whether Kuminga even has one this year…
why would the warriors give up money and roster space for 2 players that are not even better than their second team? Kings offer is just getting rid of pieces they don’t need. Warriors better off letting Kuminga go and sign players with the extra money for letting him go.
He obviously does. When he returned at the very end of the season he didnt seem to be fully healthy yet, and his shot was super rusty. The team was in a 5 way race to stay out of the play in and couldnt afford the loses to get him up to speed. He may not have the featured starting spot, but he is like the 6-7 man at worst.
Like he was bad and the team was losing to worse teams when he came back. I think Kerr should have tried to bring him back in a little more when the playoffs started.
> The whole point of the deal is they dont have time to wait around… If
> they arent improved this year none of the players on offer have the
> long term upside of JK.
Exactly. MDJ/Lakob also must plan for what happens after Steph and Jimmy, which could be way sooner than folks here acknowledge. The critical point is that MDJ and Lakob know that the W’s are on BORROWED TIME right now. This could be the last season before the rebuild.
No NBA team has ever used a core this old. If things go wrong this year (like, the old guys miss too many games to contend), Lakob/MDJ are not running these old guys back the next season.
Sure, but by the same token nobody else is going to really want to pay that much to see if he can figure it out. I get that he might end up being good someday. But he’s already expensive. Maybe someone is going to give this guy $25M for the next few years to see if he can figure it out, but I hope it isn’t my team.
I personally think Steph can keep up at this pace ish into his early 40s. His smaller body doesnt just hit the wall aging wise the way bigger dudes do. Like he is closer to a marathon runner than a sprinter and those types of athletes perform way better at older ages than the quick twitch ones. Most top Marathon runners are 30-50.
Jimmy Butler fits well in the system, but he is also matching salary for a max guy like Giannis. I wouldnt be shocked if this is his last year in SF. They have been keeping the powder dry for a big deal, and Butler is the outgoing if it ever happens.
This season they are old. Although the success of the team is more based on the young guys like Post/Podz/TJD/Moody getting better. You just have to have a good enough roster to support resting your old guys as much as you need to to keep them fresh.
Read your history lol. Thats all teams did before real money and FA. You ever heard of Celics … Lakers, Knicks ….
You are right this is their last run at it. But you don’t just give Kuminga away. He is a big upside talent. That should get Warriors what they need. Has to be right. Cause this is their last major move here.
@Dynamite
Saric, Carter and two 2nds is fair?
Nah
He is the top FA left.
I too think it’s fair, but it makes sense that the Warriors are trying to milk this for all it’s worth, particularly with a young player who possesses high upside.
Sounds like a plan
So let’s just do a recap…. 2023 trade deadline… GSW could have sent out:
Poole, Wiseman, Kuminga, and a FRP for Kevin Durant.
Poole was sent out along with a 2027 2nd and 2030 FRP for CP3.
Wiseman was traded for 2 SRPs and GP2.
Kuminga is about to get dealt and net like 2 SRPs.
So instead of having Kevin Durant since the 2023 deadline… they lost a FRP, netted 2 SRPs, and landed GP3.
And people on here didn’t want to pull the tigger and trade Wiseman or Kuminga…
That was not the ask for Durant at all. The salary matching alone for Durant in 23 required one of Klay or Green in the package to make it work along with all the young players and all the picks. Also he probably didnt want to go back to GSW then so why would they trade for him. Same as last summer.
Poole was sent out for CP3 to get off his contract before the new CBA made it a worse deal, and the 1st is top 20 protected so its not much.
Wiseman was traded while he still had value for 5 2nds, and you wouldnt have gotten that now.
They will just keep him rather than two 2nds…
THAT TRADE WAS NEVER AN OPTION! THEY COULD NEVER GET DURANT FOR THAT!
Wrong. Durant wanted to leave the Warriors in 2019. The trade eventually lead to them acquiring Wiggins and Kuminga.
Poole and Wiggins lead to them acquiring Butler.
What trade interest did the Warriors have in Durant in 2023?
They were actively involved in trade talks with the Nets before the Suns acquired him, Kuminga was the hold up
The hold up was Durant not wanting to go back there lol.
Where did you read that? Rumors don’t always mean an active pursuit. The Markkanen-to-Warriors was talked about a lot but Dunleavy never actually pursued it.
He left for a reason. They never treated Durant like a brother. They treated him like a high end escort that needed them more than they needed him. Even though they had just committed the biggest choke job in NBA history.
Even their GM was throwing shots at him during the championship parade.
No, the biggest choke job was Celtics losing to the Warriors in ’22. How was that possible?
You really believe Durant was the victim here. He got his next coach fired. How many titles did Nets and Suns win with KD?
I could care less about Durant’s overrated ass. The point is he didn’t want to be in Golden State.
He also didn’t want to be in OKC, Brooklyn, Phoenix, and soon Houston…I’m sure they say the same thing about your a…
@Darren
Except he left because he was sensitive to the (entirely valid) criticism that joining a 73-9 team to get easy rings was a weak move, and he wanted to prove he could win a championship without GSW.
So far, he hasn’t got past the 2nd rd while losing that home game 7 in OT with his 0 pts on 0-6 shooting, has been swept in the 1st rd twice, and most recently missed the playoffs.
And ofc, the massive interference from the league in 2016in games 5-7 means that series can’t reasonably be termed a choke job.
All of these teams seeing the potential of Kuminga and wanting him. Yet the Warriors are devaluing him. The franchise is terrible for young players
Fit matters within your starting 5. You really want to play the only Steph can shoot past 15′ lineups. Welcome to the modern NBA where you cant play 4 non shooters no matter the talent.
How are they devaluing him? They offered him $30million, and he turned it down. He was hardly an offensive juggernaut last season.
Post, Podz, and Moody are still young players. The trio had very good seasons. So, it is hard to say the Warriors are terrible for young players.
KERR is terrible for young players. GSW is about to sign the oldest roster possible just to appease Kerr
They probably let Looney walk because he was “too young”
Somebody spread a rumour recently that Washington were offering SA 6th pick + Sarr for the 2nd pick. If true, that was smart by Washington. And smart by SA to deny it, of course.
If this Kuminga to Washington rumour is true, and they are working on the deal, it means that they are not hopeless. In case you didn’t watch the Wizards last year (most of you didn’t, of course), they had one of, if not the least talented group of players to go out on NBA courts ever. I’m not kidding, they finished with the 2nd-worst point differential in league history for a reason. And it’s not that they tanked, it’s that those guys looked like they don’t have skills, talents, and don’t have a future in the league. Carrington, Sarr, bust Johny Davis, JR Thor, Colby Jones looked awful to various degrees. The coach had a big part to play, too, of course.
Kyshawn and Bilal are OK, but in this league, where each team has so much talent on their rosters, it’s simply not enough. Champagnie, who went undrafted 4 years ago, looked like the best hooper out there.
The team really needs somebody with an upside, somebody who can become a part of something, or have real value as an asset. Kuminga can be that. GS did a good job of sandbagging his value. If Washington can get him for a reasonable value, it will be a good move. Give him minutes, channel his hate towards Kerr into basketball, and he might blossom.
The guy is 22 years old, he’s younger than just about anyone in his class, and is similar in age to many players from the 22 and the 23 drafts. Only 3 months older than Thompson twins; the same age as Miller. 6 months younger than Chet and Mathurin, 16 months younger than Mobley and Jalen Johnson, who were drafted the same year.
Whats the return from WAS? Who do they have that helps GSW win this year? Im not matching salary for Smart or Middleton since that would cost a lot more matching than Kuminga alone, and both will probably be bought out and are negative assets. Everything else on the roster that isnt 2 washed dudes is more raw than Kuminga. I dont even think they have a way to match, and GSW can only take back half of the eventual Kuminga salary with BYC.
I actually really like what WAS has done since they brought in the new FO. I think they have made a bunch of really smart moves to set themselves up for later, but they still need a star.
They made moves, but those moves don’t move the needle. Used cap space but only acquired 2nds, while Brooklyn acquired a good 22nd pick in this draft by taking 1 guy for 15m AAV for 3 years in that Porzingis trade.
They had a bunch of guys who could have had more value had they not been so awful with that coach. Poole, Kuzma could have returned more. Valanciunas only brought a couple of 2nds. Brogdon they didn’t even trade. The team needs more than those marginal moves.
And don’t even mention Avdija… Such a brilliant player, so much potential, amazing contract, traded away for 1frp and Carrington… That move made me lose all faith in them.
GS needs bigs and forwards, and that’s exactly what Washington don’t have. Vukcevic would definitely be of interest for GS, a big and can hit a 3, had a good end to the last season, comes from a proper basketball background (Real Madrid academy) and played in leagues in Europe; Champagnie too, an excellent rebounder and a real no-nonsense pro. But idk with those 2, Washington will probably be reluctant to give them. I would be.
Holmes (13m) is a big and not useless. It would probably have to be Holmes, one of the 2 guys I mentioned and 2nd rounders. No way they would give frps. In terms of players, that’s a much better return than Saric and that 6″ guard Sacramento were offering.
There’s also Kispert (13m), who’s on a very nice long-term contract. It’d be interesting to see what both teams would value Kuminga and Kispert in a trade. Personally, I’d rather trade Kispert if it allowed Champagnie and Vukcevic to stay. Olynyk (13m) is there now, I’m sure Washington would like to trade him. Other than those guys, nobody else makes sense, salary-wise or as a product on the court.
I like the drafting they have been doing. I think Sarr and Bilal are interesting. Also clearing 100M in cap space for next summer when there are at least at this point some real interesting FA is fun. They can also be the team getting the first to take on Mann if that works out better.
They should have traded Kuzma sooner he was worth more the year before for sure.
Poole never really had positive value on WAS, and they were lucky he rebounded after that first year of brutal shaqtin moments. This may have been the perfect time to get off his money.
You were never getting more than a second or two for Valanciunas.
Avdija seemed fine at the time, maybe even a little over pay. Its a rough one when a guy takes a leap as soon as you deal him.
Vuc was really insanely hot from 3 to start last year and then trash for 5 months after. Like he does one thing non negative and thats shooting, but he hasnt shot well the last 2 years outside of one hot 6 week stretch. Vuc is soooo bad on defense. He also forces you into playing drop since thats the only scheme he can handle. Like Quentin Post is probably better than Vuc this season. He shoots better and is also bad on defense. It sounds like if he doesnt retire theyre getting Horford anyways.
Kisperts interesting. For some reason I thought they already dealt him in one of the other moves. He fits better than Kuminga now, but he has almost no upside beyond what he is already.
Avdija always had it in him. I’ll list a group of players: Jokic, Doncic, Sengun, Avdija, Wembanyama. You know what they all had in common? All of them were clearly the best players, standout players in their domestic leagues, on a very good level at ages 17-18-19. Jokic was the best player and the MVP of the Balkan league (3-5 best in Europe); Doncic was the best player in the Spanish league (No.1 league in Europe), and in the Euroleague, so the best player on the continent; Avdija was the MVP of the Israeli league (very good level, 5-6 best in Europe); Sengun was the MVP of the Turkish league (2-3 best in Europe, very tough league), Wemby was the MVP and the best player of the French league (4-6 best in Europe).
I’m not talking “the most-promising player under 21”, a rookie of the year, a rising star, or anything like that. I’m talking the absolute best player in the competition. Competing for a place in a team where it’s not like NBA where they will pamper you if you’re a high pick, oh no, you have to carve out a place for yourself out there. And leading a team to titles. At age 18. If you have those players in some of the best leagues in Europe, they are special. And if the scouts don’t see it, they are doing a poor job.
Bilal was a good pick. Sarr and everybody else they took in 2024, I don’t want to be too harsh on the team for taking them. Everyone said it was the weakest class ever. Washington had 4 of those guys, and it sure looked like it. They looked awful, for the most part. Sarr has a lot to prove; he didn’t show much, IMO.
Vukcevic, not Vucevic. A different player – a young Italian big that shoots 3, with a promising future. Vucevic is still in Chicago :)
I’m 99% sure Kispert would look better and more valuable in GS than in Washington. He’s a better player than Buddy, I’d say. Smarter, has a bigger repertoire. I have particular feelings towards Kispert, because he was drafted one spot before Sengun, who was the best player available at the time, and other quality players in that 2021 deep draft. Reason? Washington wanted a ready 22 y.o. to help Beal win now… I sat there heartbroken in front of my screen when they took Kispert and Sengun went next… Not a player’s fault, but every time I see him play I think back to that night of the 2021 draft.
If there’s a 1:1 Kuminga for Kispert, with no other players, maybe a couple of 2nds, that would be an excellent deal for Washington.
Now I would take that deal as well.
I’m with you here – I like what the Wizards have been doing. They haven’t been fortunate in the draft lottery except in a year when there weren’t many/any slam dunk future stars available. So the rebuild is taking a bit longer than some, and it follows years of being directionless. But they seem to be drafting good people and most of them are very young and look like future rotation pieces. I like Tre a lot and we haven’t seen him suit up yet. They need to be bad for another year and definitely can’t afford to give up their top-8 protected pick in 2026. It is thought to be deep draft class at the top, so hopefully they get someone who moves the needle. I’m willing to be patient with them this year and keeping my fingers crossed that they can add a future fringe all-star or better in the draft next year.
Who spread the rumor? Who is your source? You can get a 1,000 rumors for a dime at Walmart these days. The Dollar Store doesn’t carry rumors anymore. Not enough shelf space. They rot after a couple hours. They thrive on volume.
The wizards are purposely rebuilding. Competitively losing as I like tho call it. Wit kuminga or not the plan is to build talent and gain draft capitol. I would like to get him but not at the sacrifice of the rebuild
You are really stretching here by talking about Colby Jones and Thor as though they played significant minutes…and you seriously think Kuzma could have returned more? He’s truly awful. I think you often make good points about the Wizards even if I generally have a much more positive view of their current roster and front office, but you are losing me here today.
I know that Kuzma was awful, that Poole was a negative for most of the season. But that’s the thing, if you have players who are not ancient, who have shown in the past that they can be useful, you want them to look good and build their value. And that coach did not help at all. One thing to tank and lose, but compete, the other is to lose by 20-40 at home, which is what they were doing routinely.
I want to be positive too. But after watching full games, their roster really looked very weak and deprived of talent. I won’t get into discussing Carrington and Sarr too much, but they’ve shown many things that don’t fill with optimism.
I think they possibly have 5 years of tanking ahead of them from this point. The lottery odds were flattened at the expense of the bottom 4 – there’s a 50% chance now that a bottom 4 team is pushed out by teams who finished higher.
If Washington have a chance to get high upside guy like Kuminga, they should pounce on it. The lottery that we saw last year with SA, Dallas, Philly jumping into the top 4, that will repeat every other year, which will make tanking teams tank for longer.
I watched them. They tanked. They’ll tank this year too, to avoid losing their FRP. They could tank with Kuminga, too—he’s not that good—but why would they want to? He doesn’t make his teammates better. And the Wiz need everyone to get better.
Sixers trade Grimes for Kuminga…that would answer all questions and solve a ll problema….maybe
Devin Carter is a really good point guard, he hasn’t really been given a chance in Sacramento due to injury.
The Kings always trade away good point guards. Lol 😆
I don’t agree. A PG in college with a career avg of 2.7 ast and 2.1 TOs can’t reasonably be termed “really good”.
His best season on a mediocre Big East Providence team he scored decently if unspectacularly at 19.7 ppg, but had only 3.6 apg and 2.7 TO/gm. Good PGs have an ast/TO ratio above 2.
link to sports-reference.com
He jumped up the board when his defense was looking very good in workouts pre draft. He also went and did runs for just about every team. His offense is abysmal though.
Carter didn’t show much this year other than he can’t shoot. If he’d looked “really good”, Kings wouldn’t have signed Schroeder to a long-term deal.
I liked Carter coming out of the draft but he’s shown little thus far. Not all his fault since he missed training camp and a good chunk of the season recovering from surgery, but he’s still an unknown at this point and the Kings seem more inclined to retool than rebuild.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Kelly Olynyk as an option if the Wizards are interested in a sign and trade. Surely he fits the Warriors style of play and timeline?
agree, they could have champagnie too
The centerpiece — Promising Young Player
Kelly Olynyk is not a promising young player
He also isnt very good anymore. He is like 60% of a perfect Warriors player. He does all the things they want, but not very well.
Exactly. That’s why I didn’t really mention Olynyk. He does what the Warriors need, but he doesn’t do it well. I can’t imagine them wanting to sign him.
Good innings eater in the regular season whos a club house vet, but unplayable in the playoffs.
8 teams left in the FIBA U19 World Cup & 2 of em are in action right now, Slovenia & Israel. Slovenia been one of the most impressive & surprising teams of the tournament. Ok Wednesday they eliminated Argentina & their top prospect Tyler Kropp, from medal contention. Today they’re currently blowing out Israel & stifling their top prospect, Omer Mayer. Slovenia is burying treys left & right while also turning over the Israelis. 4mins left in the 3rd, Slovenia up 15… link to m.youtube.com
Slovenia has a couple of really talented kids on this team, especially Mark Padjen & Zak Smrekar. They may not be deep enough to wub a medal but depending on who they play tmrw they very well may. They’re long, tenacious defensively, smart/willing passers, all good shooters. Along with Cameroon, Germany & USA they’re right up there as my favorite team in this tournament rn… still up 16 w/ 5:37 left… pretty sure Mayer (Purdue commit) & Karram (Utah big) are both still in single figures combined for Israel
Slovenia in to the semis. Gonna be really interesting to see Luka playing with some of these guys in a few yrs, esp if he’s still with the Lakers in a few yrs & they make it to the Olympics. Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple of these guys playing for Slovenia’s Eurobasket team next month (coincidentally in the same group as Israel).
Australia & Germany play in abt a hour (2 of the top 3 teams in the tournament so far) & Slovenia faces the winner tmrw.
Omer Mayer has a bright future but Padjen basically strapped him up today. 9pts 6tos for Mayer. This will be a game that probably sits with him for a second. He’ll have another high profile matchup tmrw & still has a chance to give his country a 5th place finish in their 1st time ever in this tournament.
Middleton, smart or CJ for Kuminga take your pick GSW. No picks tho unless you want some 2nds.
Prob be 1 of the 1st 2, Smart if I had to guess
Warriors can only take back about $24 million in a 1-for-1 trade using Kuminga. So to get Middleton or CJ they’d have to include Heild or Moody. Is it worth trading Kuminga and one of those? I think it could work for Smart.
Nope. Base year compensation means they can only take back half of what Kuminga signs for. So on a 24M deal they can take back 12M.
Its why this is so hard. You need a team that wants him with something to give, and you might need BRK to get involved taking money because Kuminga counts for 1/2 his outgoing.
Also why give an asset for Middleton when they are just going to buy him out? Smarts the same. CJ might have a little more value, but not nearly what he makes.
Like you want me to take your bad contracts that are 30M+ Im going to need one 1st for eating your contract, and two more 1sts with one protected as value for Kuminga since all Im getting is a broken over paid player.
That click you hear is GSW hanging up on WAS after telling them to get f***ed
Who would the Wizards send out in a sign and trade with the Warriors? Middleton? McCollum? Smart?
They all make WAAAYYYYY more money than the GSW would have outgoing. Im not trading you Kuminga and 2 other pieces for a broken dude in his 30s waiting to get bought out. SMH
GS can take back only half of what Kuminga signs for. If he signs for 25, they can’t even take Holmes, Olynyk or Kispert, as all of them make 13.
If Kuminga sings for 35, they can take back one of Holmes, Olynyk, Kispert, plus somebody on a low rookie contract or close-to-mininum deal, like Vukcevic, Champagnie, AJ Johnson, Kyshawn.
That’s the deal GS and Washington will be looking at.
It looks like they could go up to 45M before the apron HC on a S&T, but they would need 80% of the 45M outgoing roughly since they would need to match the inverse of the 120% GSW would be allowed to send. Roughly 35M outgoing on a deal for 45M from WAS, but GSW can only take 22M back so it cant be one player on a big deal, and a 3rd team has to take 13M or more from WAS as well.
In all these deals a 3rd team has to absorb the difference between what GSW outgoing counts as and Kumingas incoming – the 20% offset theyre allowed.
If you look at all the teams in on Kuminga as mentioned you can start by who offers teh warriors the most to get him. The Kings deal is weak and not a chance unless they send a unprotected 1st round pick in next year’s draft. Wizards have some parts the warriors could use in a trade. The Bulls have either a 1st rounder or White in a trade. bucks i don’t see anything unless they are offering a 1st and a 2nd rounder with fillers. i just don’t see Bucks being very serious after Kuminga. Nets have somepicks and players that could make it happen.
Bucks dont really have 1st or 2nds. Wizards matching salary is all trash. If you dont want White CHI has nothing to offer in terms of rotation pieces. Nets had the cap room to just make him an offer the Warriors would have to match or just let him leave, but they didnt want to do that.
NOP have a moron running the team and a couple pieces the Warriors would want. I would do Kuminga in a deal for Herb or Trey.
Yeah, “varying degrees” … can include negative degrees. BKN-? Shocking, as Marks made a point of saying they weren’t going to pursue RFAs. So far, his use of cap space has been underwhelming, but consistent with his statements.
I heard they rather wait and go after players in next free agency since there will be better options than this year’s boring free agent class. Also get a lottery pick next year will have a lot more talent in that draft.
That’s what Marks said several times. But he’s taken on two multi-year deals (MPJ and Mann) that will cut into the next 2 years’ space as well. If he were to take Kuminga into cap space at 30 mm, he’d be lucky to still have the MLE to shop with for the rest of his rebuld. It’s basically too late to have interest in Kuminga this summer on a cap space basis.
Mann is a good gamble. I don’t know why he went for MPJ? I guess he hopes MPJ is back to great form and flip him but that uis a huge gamble.
I expect him to try and move both of those players either this summer or as soon into the season as he can.
I’m sure he will (neither is a long term piece). But right now those players’ salaries occupy his cap space for 3 years. Trading the players only restores that cap space to the extent they take back less salary.
Point is that two weeks ago, BKN, with 75 mm or so in cap space, had a fairly easy path to obtain either or both of Kuminga and Grimes in cap space S&Ts or offer sheets. Now, he doesn’t; it’s now a harder task. Marks is a smart guy, he wouldn’t have done what he did the last couple of weeks if Kuminga were the apple of his eye. I’ll bet he’s looking to be a cap space facilitator for a charge.
Or you tie up all your cap space on offers that their own teams match because you arent offering anything, and they dont want the asset to walk for nothing. Because your cap space is tied up until the offer is resolved you may miss out on all the other stuff waiting for the RFA offer to play out, which takes at least 5 days into FA.
Meanwhile I think Mann could be appealing to a contender mid season, and MPJ should have some value as well even though his salary is high. You got assets to take them, and get more shipping them somewhere else. This is what OKC did. Trade guys. Trade the salary matching you get back again. Eventually the contract is untradable you get back and then you buy them out or waive them to get back into cap room sooner.
I believe it’s only 36-48 hour tie up now. It hasn’t helped. With BKN, it’s likely as much about Marks’ personal history with big offer sheets. Mostly, a history of having dodged bullets (they were all vast overpays and yet still matched, to the detriment of the matchers).
What you suggesting is done a lot, but it works better with expiring deals because teams will easily take back more if its expiring. Neither Mann nor MPJ are dead money by any means.
The deals all get agreed to at the start of FA so you have to include the moratorium in the time delay of the RFA, since the teams have to wait till the FA clock starts.
MPJ and Mann have value in a rotation its just a question of price point. Like both are players you would rather have longer if your acquiring them, just maybe not at the current price point. Wait till mid season when some money has burned off, and teams have had injuries weaken there roster while becoming dead money and you might get some real value. They have to balance prioritizing assets or future flexibility. I assume you could get something for both if theyre having a decent healthy year from a contender.
The Nets never had a chance to sign Kuminga to an offer sheets. GS would match any offer sheet, including the max. Phoenix matched Ayton’s max 3 years ago and didn’t blink. The Nets also had no chance to sign Giddey.
The player Nets should have gone for was Aldama. You would have to pay him way over 20m to prevent Memphis from matching, but he was worth it.
Yeah with the JJJ extension business they had an artificial HC.
Of course they had (and still have) a chance. You don’t think he’d sign a max offer sheet with BKN right now? GSW might match, but they can do the offer sheet.
Aldama never became a free agent. His deal was done with MEM before the free agent period began. So, they had no chance to do one with him.
With RFAs, you work with them after the season ends, not when the free agency opens. That’s what Brooklyn should have been doing with Aldama in April, May, June. But heck, there’s no point incriminating them; RFAs are a very particular business.
The Nets can (or did they already spend their cap?) sign Kuminga or Giddey to a max. The players will accept it, sure. But it doesn’t do anything for the Nets. GS and Chicago will match, and all that the Nets achieve will be putting GS and Chicago in a bad contractual situation. Indiana did not achieve anything for themselves when they gave Ayton the max, they only messed up Phoenix and contributed to their troubles.
The teams don’t go for RFAs not because they don’t want the players, but because they know it’s a waste of effort. The teams those players are with will match in most cases.
After MPJ and Mann I dont think they have a full max left. They burned some rostering 5 1sts with fully guaranteed deals.
It would be tight, due to their own actions, which is why I think that ship has sailed even if they could. Fans turn on a dime. FO offseason plans don’t, unless there is something totally unforseeable. Not the case here.
The offer sheet ties up your cap space until after most of FA is done. Its why RFA is such a B___ for guys, because the process of doing the offer means you miss out on everything else. If the NBAPA wanted to fix this they would negotiate so the RFA process happens before the moratorium so that its resolved as FA opens.
Now maybe this season with only 1 team under they could have just made teams wait. I doubt it though since some of these deals needed to happen when they did.
Aldama signed that deal because his agents had already reached out to teams and knew the market. This is what always happens. If a team had let his agent know there was a 28M offer waiting for him he wouldnt have extended unless MEM came close.
I see. Well, it really does suck for RFAs then.
The teams were clever when they designed the CBA. A lot of it was centered around keeping the players with the teams they were drafted to. Players Association probably did not think it through very well in terms of the timing at the moratorium. At first glance, it looks good for a player – if your team doesn’t value you, any team out there can give you a fair deal. But the devil is in the details. And restricted free agency is such a niche thing; even if they did predict how it would turn out, PA was probably bargaining for concessions elsewhere.
Kuminga’s case is very interesting. I don’t believe he’ll take a QO. That’s so risky, and he will depend on Kerr to get the minutes and the role that will make him attractive. But if he hates GS and wants to leave them with nothing in a year, he might, lol.
I still think he signs with GS and gets traded after Dec, 15. But as a Wizards fan, I’d like them to find a way to get him in now. He’s not necessarily the exact type of player and character I like, but the talent is there. Washington are not in a position to choose; if they can grab a high upside guy, they should.
The QO would mean turning down at least 75M guaranteed life changing money for 7.6M or something. Injuries happen, and down years tank markets, so it would be soooo risky.
Thats my best guess since the mechanics of a trade just become so much easier then. You can even combine him with like Moody/Heald and get up to a max player by then. The exception I would say is part of a bigger package or deal. Like he could be part of the salary and package for Trey Murphy along with salary and a pick or something. Come on Joe Dumars make another dumb trade baby…
A player that is playing under a qualifying offer would not lightly approve a trade, because his new team won’t have his Bird Rights. An UFA without his team having Bird Rights can only sign into cap space (or a MLE). What would a team give up to rent Kuminga for the balance of a year? Would it be worth more than his value to GSW for the balance of the year? Who knows, but I’m sure it doesn’t involve Trey Murphy.
Bird rights are traded with the player. The only way to lose them is to get waived and go unclaimed or sign as a FA.
The trade would probably send him to somewhere that wanted him, and conversely willing to pay him what he wants. Also next offseason has more cap teams. He also could just play out the year on his contract while GSW have like 9M in MLE space and a BAE being that far below the apron. It also would let them reset the repeater.
Bird Rights do NOT travel for players that are playing on qualifying offers. This can be easily confirmed.
If GSW trades Kuminga for anyone less than Giannis they are officially idiots. Just keep him and start Kuminga at the 4 and tell him he is a 4 and shut up. GET BIGS, GET BIGGER.
The chances that GSW are officially idiots are high then.
he is just a bandwagon fan
“ For Kuminga, the goal is ending up in a situation where he feels he has the full support of an organization and its coaching staff and can be a featured part of a team’s core.”
How long I been saying Warriors are not developing their players. Gave away Wiseman and now about to do same with Kuminga. I’m just way ahead lol.
There are only two decisions here for Warriors. They trade him now and build for playoffs. Or sign Kuminga and find a role. Then either keep him or trade him at TD. Then in Feb you will get the value of contract back. So it could be a better trade.
But if things go south by then. You might just take what you can. Warriors have done this to themselves like I been saying for years now.
Washington is interesting cause they have young talent. So you could find a better mix for team. Like two young talents that become rotation players.
The Heat have Ware. I would start there. Jaquez can also help now. I don’t know if Heat do it. If I can get Ware, Jaquez, Love ….. the money works in a sign n trade. Throw in a future pick. Or like three 2nd rd picks …..
The right deal now is best. Then you can be strong for playoffs.
Oh jeez Al. They already have a role for Kuminga. You just choose to ignore it.
A raw talent bench player Kuminga wants $30m, team doesn’t even offer $8m. Warriors want a starter and a 1st. Please Kings just walk away, do something right you made a offer, they don’t like it. Move on Kerr has a spot on the bench for him.
